Director: Gus Van Sant. With Sean Penn och Josh Brolin.
Oscar-winner Sean Penn plays Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to a prominent political office in the United States. His victory was not only a huge impact on gay rights, he also changed the perception of human rights and became, before he was shot to death in 1978, a hero in his homeland.
The film tells of Milk’s last eight years when he moves to San Francisco. In one of the city’s working class blocks, he opens Castro Camera, which soon becomes a gathering place for homosexuals from across the country. Milk’s newfound friends supports him when he enters into the world of politics, while he gets adversaries. Among them is another man elected to the municipal council, Dan White. Milk and White’s views are increasingly apart – but their personal destinies are converging more and more.
